State police investigating dumping along Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail

SHELDON – Vermont State Police and state environmental officials are investigating after a large quantity of trash, scrap metal and other waste was discovered along the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail in Sheldon.

Vermont Agency of Transportation personnel discovered the debris along the trail near Sweet Hollow Road, according to state police.

Photos released with the investigation show extensive debris lining portions of the trail, including discarded boats, tires, scrap metal, garbage bags and other refuse.

Police said the majority of the waste appears to have come from adjoining properties and was placed along the edge of the rail trail.

In addition to what state police described as “substantial cleanup costs,” officials said the waste poses safety and environmental concerns.

The incident remains under investigation. State police had not identified anyone accused of the dumping as of Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermont State Police St. Albans Barracks at 802-524-5993 or the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
