South Hero Bicentennial Museum open after parade
SOUTH HERO – Check out the South Hero Bicentennial Museum after the 4th of July parade. The museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026.
Over the winter months, volunteers refreshed and reorganized several exhibits throughout the museum. Walls were repainted, displays updated, and the military history section was redesigned in recognition of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
To mark the museum’s milestone anniversary, organizers also released the third installment in the popular Journey Through South Hero series. The new book focuses on life in South Hero in 1926, a time when automobiles were becoming more common while horse-and-buggy travel remained part of daily life. Stories from the era highlight the occasional challenges and humorous encounters that came with sharing the roads during that transition period. Proceeds from book sales will support museum exhibits and preservation projects.
Museum officials announced two changes for the 2026 season. The museum is now open Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays, while continuing Saturday hours and appointments arranged through southherobicentennialmuseum.com.
Admission is free. Visitors can also enjoy the comfort of the museum’s air-conditioned exhibits while exploring the town’s history and heritage.

My Grandmother was Lillian Lawrence and I have an old book dated from 1955 that was a guest book the Lawrence wrote in when they visited South hero. I really don’t know what to do with it. Any ideas? Elinor Lawrence who died in 2017 in a house fire is in the book and I believe her son was the last person to write in the book in 2003
